My favorite recent lie (aside from all the tap dancing I did to preserve the secrets of Santa and the Elf on the Shelf…) Yes, sweetheart, this IS your glow stick from the parade last night. Yes, I know it was purple and now it’s orange. But you see, well, the blue part of the glow stick isn’t as strong as the red part. So it fades first.

Reminds me of the time I made minestrone for dinner. My then-6 yr old daughter skeptically held up a slice of yellow squash and asked what it was as her siblings waited anxiously to hear the answer. Knowing that I’d have a mutiny if I told her what it really was, I said “lemon.” She eyed it suspiciously, ate it and then said, “It didn’t taste like a lemon.” “Oh, that’s because it’s a soup lemon; it’s not sour like regular lemons.” All three kids looked at their bowls, shrugged and continued eating. Crisis averted! All hail the mighty soup lemon.
