There are times when I observe a child doing something nasty to another child, I walk up to them and say, “Did you just do that?” and they say, “No.”
You get everything from the calm future psychopaths to the hysterical martyrs crying tears of guilt, but the refrain is always the same: “I didn’t DO anything!”
It makes our job very difficult. Giving consequences to a guilty child convinced of his own innocence makes you die inside a little bit each time you have to bench them or send them to the principal.
My favorite is when they are specific in their “I didn’ts”… I’m not late… (yeah, because saying you’re not makes it so)… I didn’t hit her… I didn’t call her a ***…. Oooooooookay….
My favorite is he made me or she made me do it……now now they made your leg fly out so they could smash their head against the what seems like concrete floor. The nod and then he really did..he made me do it.
Banished to the back table for some thinking time.
Oh man you have such a good heart, the children are lucky to have you as their teacher. I think the above issue may need a bit more than a magic band-aid. 😉
My daughter is just getting old enough for the bold-faced lie, but not quite old enough to know when she’s busted. (Still holding the marker in her hand….) I guess as we get older we just become better liars….?
This one reminds me of a podcast I listen to. It’s a psychology podcast, in this episode there is an interview with Jamie Raser about his book “Raising Children You Can Live With.” I enjoy psychology and the theme of this comic is discussed in this podcast episode, so if you are interested, here’s a link http://www.thepsychfiles.com/2009/08/episode-103-raising-children-interview-with-author-jamie-raser/

I know! They look you in the eye and deny everything you just watched unfold…

I’d be terrified if I had the job 🙂
Thankfully, you have to deal with the little ones, not me. My head would likely explode.

LOL – a little girl wrote her name and last initial with a sharpie on the door. Tried to deny it…

It’s good you catch them. Some teachers wouldn’t notice.

That’s true too! Some teachers wouldn’t notice a train hurtling through their room.

I guess you’re right, and seeing a child in that transition point is somehow galling, as if we want them to be BETTER at lying!

Hahaha exactly. “I’m so proud of how you’re developing intellectually and becoming a master of manipulation!” Wait… Huh? 😛
