Yep, I think the difference is they treat it at face value, as if they are talking about purple or blue.

When my sister was very young and first saw a black person in a grocery store, she blurted out loudly, “Ooh, Mom. He’s Dark!” While my mom awkwardly pushed the cart away as quickly as possible.

I love this! My two youngest daughters have best friends who are “brown” as they say. It was years before any of them took note of their differences in skin color, but “brown” has been my girls’ description of their besties ever since!
